A note
about directional indications inside the cathedral
The cathedral
is situated with its front doors facing north. Thus, the altar in
the apse of the cathedral faces south. The common practice of the
Roman Church is to construct her churches, when possible, so that the
apse faces east. Even when this is not possible, as was the case
at Our Lady of Lourdes, it is common practice to use terminology with
regard to directions inside the church as if the building were built
facing the traditional direction. Thus, the altar is always
described as sitting on the east end. This helps readers to
visualize exactly where things are when they read descriptions. |
